ABSTRACT
Vitamin supplementation is one such alternative therapy and the focus of our current study, which looked at
the effects of vitamin C on urate levels in patients with gout. Study was conducted to determine the effects of high
vitamin C intake from diet and supplements on serum uric acid concentrations during 2 months. Group of 100 adults’
nonsmokers and hyperuricemia, from both genders and aged between 20-70 yrs was selected. Vitamin C has been touted
as a preventive for problems ranging from cancers to the common cold. But can a daily vitamin C supplement protect
from Gout. Possibly, researchers say, but results of studies on vitamin C and gout are mixed. Vitamin C is believed to
protect against gout by lowering serum urate, thought to be due to greater removal of urate through the kidneys. A
modest vitamin C dose failed to reduce uric acid levels to a clinically significant degree in patients with established gout.
A further study found that reduction of uric acid was significantly less in gout patients taking vitamin C compared to
those who started or increased their dose of allopurinol. For every 500-milligram increase in vitamin C intake, the risk
for gout fell by 17 percent. The risk dropped by 45 percent when study participants took more than 1,500 mg of vitamin
C a day. Effect of vitamin C among people with gout needs further study, In addition to understanding whether there are
true benefits for people with gout, the amount of vitamin C that would be ideally effective without causing some of the
harmful side effects of excessive vitamin C (such as kidney stones) will also need to be determined. A new study
confirms that vitamin C does indeed raise the output of uric acid, but not to a degree sufficient to make a difference in
terms of reducing gout symptoms. While current treatments are successful in reducing the amount of uric acid in the
blood, there are many patients who fail to reach appropriate urate levels and need additional therapies.
ABSTRACT
Computed Tomography (CT) is increasingly used in abdominal imaging with a subsequent increase in the
collective radiation dose. This is of particular concern, especially in young patients and in those with chronic diseases
who undergo repeated CT studies including treatable cancers. The objective of this study was to establish the Computed
Tomography National Diagnostic Reference Level (NDRL) In Paediatrics Radiography. 96 patient of CT abdomen and
pelvis, 23% (22) of them were routine, 8% (8) tri-phase Abdomen, and 69% (66) CTKUB. The DRLS in 75% value was
637, 1095 and 514 mGy.cm Sequentially, Most of the patients were sent for the urinary tract problems especially renal
stones, to check routinely without contrast agent, so DRLs (75%) for the abdomen in this study was proposed (575 mGy
/ cm). The data collected from 8 radiology departments .The patients were examined with the own department protocol
using multi-slice CT (MSCT) dual slice ,8, 16 ,64 and 128 CT slice from different manufacturers. The range of patient
dose per CT procedure was between 160 mGy.cm to 916 mGy.cm. Diagnostic reference level (DRL) was proposed for
abdomen CT procedures. It is necessary to take a lot of precautions to reduce the radiation dose of children, especially
direct exposure to the genital areas, by means of appropriate radiation protection, and the appropriate examination after
consultation between the technician and the doctor and radiologist, and the existence of a reasonable interval between the
examination and return.
ABSTRACT
Divorce cases have been recorded on the high side due to the prevalence of infertility in our society. There is
believe that fruits improve fertility. The present study was carried out to evaluate in vivo the effect of date (Phoenix
dactylifera) fruit juice on reproductive hormones and antioxidant status in male albino rats. Six (6) rats were divided into
two (2) groups of three (3) rats each. (Control and Test). The control was administered distilled water (2ml/kg) while
Test was administered 2ml/kg of the fruit juice for twenty-eight (28) days. The result showed that oral administration of
the date fruit juice significantly (P˂0.05) increased the level of antioxidant enzymes (SOD and GST) from 2.87±0.15 to
3.87±0.21 and 3.27±0.21 to 4.73±0.15 (Units/mgprotein) respectively. The level of Testosterone also increased
significantly (P<0.05) from 0.57±0.03 to 0.94±0.08 (ng/ml), while the activity of FSH and LH hormones increased nonsignificantly
(P˃0.05) from 20.23±0.86 to 21.87±0.65 and 11.00±0.34 to 11.57±0.72(miu/ml) respectively. There was a
significant weight gain in the testes administered 2 ml/kg date fruit juice as compared to the control. Our result implies
that date fruit juice had a significant effect on the testis and increased the level of testicular hormones and antioxidant
enzymes. This justify the conclusion that the juice may improve fertility.
ABSTRACT
Statins are most widely used lipid-lowering agents. Their use in patients with chronic liver disease has been
limited because of the fear of worsening liver function. However, recently evidence suggests that this class of drugs is
safe in patients with chronic liver disease. In this editorial, I will summarize studies performed in patients with chronic
liver disease using statins.
ABSTRACT
Background: Recent studies have shown that obesity and impaired glucose tolerance are associated with
gallbladder polyps (GBP), and are currently considered risk factors for gallbladder cancer. Therefore, the prevalence of
GBP seems to be increasing. However, there is less studies discussing the correlation between obesity indicators and
gallbladder polyps. Purpose: This study used adult health examination data analysis to understand the association of
obesity indicators with GBP. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional data analysis study. The study collected the
medical examinations of a regional hospital in Kaohsiung from 2011 to 2016. Gallbladder polyps were determined by
abdominal ultrasound scanning. Use waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), and waist-height ratio (WHR)
as the obesity indicator. All statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS 20.0 software package for Windows.
Results: The higher rate of abnormal GBP was male, less than 40 years old, normal waist circumference, normal waistheight
ratio, and normal BMI. Performed a logistic regression analysis. The variables included in the regression analysis
are: gender, age, BMI, WC, WHR. The results show WHR and BMI are protective factor for gallbladder polyps, odds
ratio and 95% (confidence interval, CI) are (OR=0.544, 95% CI=0.442-0.670) and (OR=0.782, 95%CI=0.613-0.998)
respectively. Conclusions: For the obesity indicators, this study found that WHR and BMI are protective factor for GBP.
ABSTRACT
Road Traffic Accidents (RTAs) are important causes of mortality and morbidity. India has a wide road
network and a greater number of RTAs compared to other countries. The objectives of this study were to determine the
demographic distribution of cases of pedestrian accidents that are presented for autopsy at King George Hospital
Mortuary. The study period is from 1st January 2016 to 31th December 2016. A total of 1782 medico legal autopsies
were conducted during the study period (2016). Road traffic fatalities alone accounted for 36.81% (n=656) of all
autopsied cases. Among them 147 cases 8.5% are pedestrians, male female ratio is 3:1 highest number of deaths 78
(53.06 %) between 41-60 years, rainy season accounting for 34%, accidents are from 6PM to 12 Mid night amounting to
48% (n=71cases). Brought to hospital 71%, died during transport to hospital 15% of cases and 13% died at the spot of
accident. Victims sustained trauma on high ways which is 44 % (n=65cases).Two-wheeler vehicles involvement by 58%
(n= 35) and heavy motor vehicles by 42% (n=17). All cases showed primary impact injuries. Secondary impact injuries
were found in 47.61% (n=70 cases) and secondary injuries in 97.27 % (n=143 cases).
ABSTRACT
Acromegaly is a rare disease linked to an excessive secretion of growth hormone that causes cardiovascular,
metabolic, articular, bone, neoplastic and respiratory disorders including sleep apnea syndrome. The prevalence of sleep
apnea syndrome (SAS) during acromegaly is high. Becoming the latter is variable under treatment: improvement,
stabilization or deterioration. His research must then be systematic. The objective is to specify the characteristics of SAS
in an acromegalic population.
ABSTRACT
Radicular cyst is one of the most common oral pathological entity. The histopathological features are too
classical most of the times. In this report we have more focused on the encounter of extensive degeneration in the cystic
wall; which shows all signs of chronic inflammation and tissue degeneration.
